CHAPTER FORTY-SIX

I didn’t know how it was possible, but coming down Myrtle’s driveway the next morning I couldn’t help but think it looked like an even bigger mess than it had been the previous evening.

I spotted Kermit and Myrtle in the yard over where Kermit had been spray painting the day before. He was pointing here and there, no doubt explaining what he’d done. Myrtle gave me an enthusiastic wave as I drove by.

I park behind Norman’s ‘borrowed’ truck, though I wasn’t entirely sure if it was the same one from the previous day. Not wanting to interrupt Myrtle’s meeting with Kermit, I headed straight for the house.

“That wasn’t his name,” I heard Jonny say as I was stepping inside.

“Sure it was,” Norman insisted.

“No it wasn’t. How would that even make sense? Think about it.”

Norman spotted me as soon as I entered the living room and smiled. “Here’s Kat. We’ll ask her.”

Jonny rolled his eyes. “She won’t know.”

“I might,” I said, Jonny’s dismissive tone instantly putting me on the defensive. Don’t you dare tell me what I don’t know.

“You won’t,” Jonny said.

“Maybe she will,” Norman said hopefully.

Snappy let out one of his mewing noises, which I took to be his agreement. He was on the countertop near Norman, and I was glad to have someone else on my side, even if it was only Snappy.

“Fine,” Jonny said, a slip of a smile crossing his lips. “Ask her.”

“What’s the name of the giant turtle creature Godzilla fights?”

I just stared at Norman for a minute before saying, “What?”

“The giant turtle creature in the Godzilla movies, what was his name?” Norman repeated.

“Why in the world would you think I’d have any idea?”

Norman continued as if he hadn’t heard me. “It’s Mothra, right? Mothra the giant turtle.”

“Mothra?” I said.

“Yeah. Mothra.”

Jonny laughed. “Do you even hear yourself? Just listen to the words you’re saying. Can’t you hear it? Mothra is a moth. It’s right there in the name.”

Norman waved a dismissive hand. “No, you just think it sounds like that because it’s in Japanese or something. Tell him I’m right, Kat. I bet Helen knows. She speaks Japanese, right?”

“So does Jonny,” I said.

Norman looked at Jonny, and he nodded. Jonny actually spoke many languages, though exactly how many and when and where he’d learned them is something he can’t recall.

“Okay, so what’s the giant turtle’s name then?”

Jonny let out a sigh and pulled out his phone. After a moment he turned the screen toward Norman and said, “Gamera.”

“Are you sure? That doesn’t sound right.” Norman took the phone and studied the screen before shrugging and showing it to Snappy. “So what do you think? Want to be Gamera?”

Snappy looked from the phone to Norman and then to me before making a disinterested noise.

“Come on. You don’t think that would be cool?” Norman asked.

I tried and failed to hold back a laugh. “Norman, the other day you said being a ninja turtle would be too obvious. How is this any different?”

“Well … this is a giant turtle.
